In this special column called the “TLC x Fempreneurs Series”, we will be featuring inspiring Female Entrepreneurs (Fempreneurs) in short. You will be able to have a sneak peek at their mindsets and their daily habits.
Believe in the power of community. On some days when you feel big goals are impossible, or when you feel like giving up, you need to lean on your like-minded community. You can even “borrow” motivation, and in turn “return” with your own inspiring stories to pay it forward.
Meet Jasmin Tay (Perky Lash)
Tell us a little about yourself. What is your business/ brand about?
Perky Lash is a homegrown brand, which seeks to provide Singaporeans with quality lash and brow services. We provide our customers with services like eyelash extensions, collagen lash lifts, and eyebrow embroidery. We also provide our customers with the ability to pick their desired design depending on their needs and preferences.
This venture was started to provide Singaporeans with affordable but quality beauty services. We differentiate ourselves by giving our customers the flexibility to choose their desired lash design from a wide range of choices at the same price. With a no-package menu, Singaporeans can be rest assured that their experience with Perky Lash would be a pleasant one, without having to deal with persistent hard selling.
Currently, our stores are located at Serangoon NEX, One Raffles Place, and Tampines 1. We just opened our 4th outlet at Yishun Northpoint Mall in March 2023 where we add on nail service offerings with the same fixed price concept. At Perky Lash, we strongly believe that everyone deserves a transparent, affordable, and relaxing environment for their beauty needs.
What got you started on your business?
My dad is my greatest inspiration for starting my entrepreneurial journey. My dad was once an entrepreneur in the textile industry 30 years ago where he designs and distributes cloth to retailers. However, as more people prefer to buy shelve clothing instead of customizing their own, he wind up his company.
He always shares his challenges and success stories with us since young and instills the strong belief that we need to crave our own business in order to be successful in life. His words impacted me deeply and with a strong interest in the beauty industry, I joined various roles like receptionist, facial therapist, and sales and marketing after I graduate from Polytechnic to have a better understanding of this industry.
Before you started on your business, what did you do on a full-time basis?
I was holding a full-time job as a marketing manager.
What were some difficulties you faced in your life and how did you overcome them?
The struggle to handle the various roles of a mother, wife, and business owner. I constantly feel that I do not have enough time for my family. Sometimes even when I am back at home, I am still tied down with work.
I think it is important to draw the line between personal and work life and to learn to put your work aside and be fully there with them. I make them sleep every night and spend quality time where we share happy and unhappy incidents that happened during the day. This is a close bonding session I cherish and look forward to each day.
Who inspires you?
My dad inspires me.
What excites you most about your industry?
I believe that beauty is not just enhancing a women’s appearance, it is boosting their self-confidence and being more motivated to take on the challenges in life. Self-confidence is the key to increased happiness and over well being.
What is your vision / personal motto?
Learn to accept failure as part of your journey and keep learning and growing.
Do you have any words of advice for other ladies who are starting their business/ starting to pursue their dream?
Believe in yourself, don’t doubt your moves, and keep going! You have already made the hardest step to start your own business so you need to stay strong and understand that this journey will never be smooth sailing.
What have you learnt recently that you hope the other ladies can take back?
It is always good to find support groups like “The Ladies Cue” where like-minded people connect and share ideas and challenges and inspire each other to perform better.
How do you think you can help ladies to feel confident and empowered?
I think my story and experiences are very similar to the ladies who are starting or plan to start their own careers. As women, we tend to overthink and be more careful in our decisions and I followed this natural instinct to plan and be prepared before I embark on my journey. You don’t have to change yourself to be someone who is a risk-taker in order to carve your own career. Be real and be yourself and do what you are best at doing and perfect it!
What is one thing you are grateful for?
I am grateful for the strong family support I have that enables me to focus on my career. My parents-in-law will help pick up the kids and mentor their homework while my husband provides emotional support and advice.
What do you do in your free time as self-care? How do you unwind?
I prefer my morning walks in the park to relax and take on new experiences like pottery classes to unwind.
