TLC x Fempreneurs Series: Margaret Wu (For Beloved One)

Meet Margaret Wu (For Beloved One)

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi! My name is Margaret Wu and I love freedom. Owning my own business gives me a sense of freedom and accomplishment. I love to run the projects in my own way and to further build my kingdom. I’m also a goal-oriented person, I would manage to achieve the goal by any methods. Furthermore, I love traveling. When I need inspiration, I’d travel around and switch away from my routines.

What got you started on your business? 

Before starting my own business, I’d been in the beauty industry for over 15 years. At the age of 35, I began to think about what else I could do. Then I decided to switch my personal runway into an entrepreneur. As a beauty magazine editor with over 15-year experience, I knew the beauty industry very well – that’s why I was determined to start my own skincare brand.

Before you started on your business, what did you do on a full time basis?

I have been in the workplace since I was a sophomore. Later I founded Jasmine Magazine in my senior year of college. Then I moved into the role of acting Beauty Director at Marie Claire. After that, I served as Director of Le Figaro Magazine, a French-language weekly news magazine. Those experiences prepared me for where I’m.

What were some difficulties you faced in your life and how did you overcome them?

The company’s beginning stage was the most difficult. I encountered many obstacles during the entrepreneurial period, but I will make every effort to minimize the duration of the difficulties. Instead of focusing on the difficulties themselves, I would focus more on searching for solutions so that it wouldn’t be that painful.

During this period, I also made a lot of effort. For instance, I took many business management courses and read many relevant books. Meanwhile, I learned from my entrepreneur friends how to develop and implement company policies and procedures, and eventually integrated them into my own version. At the same time, I started to dig deeper into product design and skincare ingredients to make sure that we’re making the best products for our audience.

For the financial business, besides hiring a professional team, I also learned how to read the statements.

What excites you most about your industry?

For me, the work itself is inspirational. I always emphasize teamwork in an organization. Nothing is more inspirational and motivational than that my employees act and work as one big team, automatically seek solutions to problems and achieve team tasks with collaborative efforts.

What is your vision / personal motto? 

1. The Master said: “If you are virtuous, you will not be lonely. You will always have friends.”

2. Positive energy makes you charming. As a woman, as long as you keep immense positive enthusiasm toward life, you’d be naturally attractive from the inside out, and this true beauty doesn’t need any makeup.

Do you have any word of advice for other ladies who are starting their business / starting to pursue their dream?

The first and the most practical suggestion is that you must fully understand the distribution and sources of venture capital, analyze the rate of return on investment, and learn about business management.

In terms of the inner part, that’s your body and mind, you must make sure that you’re strong enough to take any possible challenges. Being an entrepreneur is not the same as being an employee. You need to be strong-willed and not afraid of failure. Meanwhile, you’d have to take every frustration as a trial of life and manage to get through it.

How do you think you can help ladies to feel confident and empowered?

First of all, you need to know and accept yourself. The first step of building confidence is to develop your self-awareness, that’s, to understand and embrace your strengths and weaknesses. You only are able to believe in yourself when the bright and dark sides of your own are fully accepted, and in this way, you can empower yourself.
It’s also worthy to mention, logical self-expression plays a vital role as well. When you can clearly speak out your attitudes, rules, needs, and opinions at the right time, your energy can be guided toward more powerful ends.

What have you learned recently that you hope the other ladies can take back?

The experience of founding a company did inspire me a lot. In the process, I began the journey of discovering myself and learning to know who truly I am. In this adventure, I’ve been facing numerous challenges, but at the same time, I also learned that I’m strong-minded enough to stay focused on my intentions and further to overcome the hurdles. So, if you have a dream, don’t hesitate, go get it!

What do you do in your free time as self-care? How do you unwind? 

I rarely have free time; I always keep myself busy (laughs). However, I like to read and participate in various training courses, e.g. I’m currently studying for an EMBA degree. Last year I also went to the U.S. to study language school to improve my language skills, and now I’m a Podcaster. Also, I like high-intensity sports, like boxing, body combat, qigong, cycling, running, etc.
