In this special column called the “TLC x Fempreneurs Series”, we will be featuring inspiring Female Entrepreneurs (Fempreneurs) in short. You will be able to have a sneak peek at their mindsets and their daily habits.
Believe in the power of community. On some days when you feel big goals are impossible, or when you feel like giving up, you need to lean on your like-minded community. You can even “borrow” motivation, and in turn “return” with your own inspiring stories to pay it forward.
Meet Cassiopea Yap (QBIsg)
Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi! My name is Cassiopea Yap, Founder of QBI. QBI is a beauty, health, and wellness brand where we create our product to help people live well and feel their best. Our products include daily health and lifestyle items such as skincare, fabric mist, powersole, and kefir yoghurt.
What got you started on your business?
At the beginning, I started business to relieve myself of all the stress and negativity that I experience at home. I was fearful of being deprived of happiness, having to witness the chaos and instability in our household. Therefore, I decided to do something I truly love and passionate about which was crafting and turn it into a business opportunity.
Before you started on your business, what did you do on a full-time basis?
Parenting and learning new skills.
What were some difficulties you faced in your life and how did you overcome them?
I experienced major difficulties during my childhood and the brokenness in my marriage. Growing up, I was a child full of insecurities. I came from a financially challenged family who is raised by a single parent, my mother. Despite all the struggles I had, financially and mentally, I aimed to be independent and I knew I deserve a better life.
The brokenness in my marriage came further in my life and led me to depression. I thought I couldn’t find a way to fix things and heal myself, but I was wrong. Miracle happened when a business associate invited me to a Christian concert with his family. I broke down in tears as it opened my perspective and gave light to my heart. I became way more religious and I found solace in my prayers.
Who inspires you?
Princess Diana. To me, a fulfilling business is better for me and yes, I am going to own it myself and be true to myself. I no longer want to live someone else’s idea or life. I just want to build my own legacy before I leave this Planet Earth for my next generation to come.”
What excites you most about your industry?
The Health and Skincare aspects of it. I am excited even though the industry is filled to the brim with products and solutions, a fact that challenged me to come up with something totally new.
The result? Ashleigh Ivory’s Black Diamond Beauty Roller and Fuji Shiitake Age-Defying Serum set.
What is your vision / personal motto?
My personal motto is “I aspire to inspire before I expire”. Through my experience, I want to empower women, help them to create a breakthrough, and turn their struggle into strength.
Do you have any word of advice for other ladies who are starting their business/ starting to pursue their dream?
Starting a business can be a walk out of your comfort zone but the key is to have the courage and willingness to start. It is also important to network with other business women to get the ideas of the current business scheme, ideas, and vent out the challenges of running a business. Other important tips are to identify and get to know your audience and tailor your service or product according to those groups.
How do you think you can help ladies to feel confident and empowered?
I always find ways to empower women, one of them is through my book, Cass by the Garden, I aim to empower women based on the journey that I had gone through as a child to adulthood to womanhood and now toward a legacy to aspire & inspire.
What have you learnt recently that you hope the other ladies can take back?
I learned that as a ladies we are powerful and we can do anything we aspire to be, believe in yourself, and trust the process.
What is one thing you are grateful for?
I am grateful for God. He has worked in so many ways in my life and He has been so faithful to me.
What do you do in your free time as self-care? How do you unwind?
I spend my free time listening to music. Music sets the tone right in the hustle and bustle of city-dwelling. I wouldn’t say no to a glass of wine or chocolates either.
