Lemon water is popular among many individuals. Some restaurants also serve it. So, what is the real hype? Is it really healthier to drink lemon water?

Lemon is a rich source of vitamin C and it possesses immense health benefits ranging from its antibacterial and antiviral properties, even helps to boost up our immunity.

Lemons are high in antioxidants. These antioxidants helps protect cells from damaging free radicals that can lead to cancer.

Studies show that consuming vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin C, especially citrus fruits like lemon, can reduce your risk of heart disease.

Kidney stones are a build-up of minerals that collect in the kidneys. They are usually made up of calcium oxalate. The most common treatment is a compound called citrate. Increasing the amount of citrate in the body prevents kidney stones from forming by stopping calcium from binding with other compounds. Lemon water contains high amounts of citrate. According to a different studies 2015 studies review, many citrus fruits can increase urine levels of citrate, which may help prevent kidney stones.

Helps in weight loss

Lemon contains soluble pectin fibre which will expand in your stomach, making you feel full for a longer period of time. However, not everyone eats the whole lemon while drinking the lemon water. Nevertheless, drinking plenty of water helps to increase the calories you burn, it may indirectly help with the weight loss. Some individuals drink more water when they add the wedge of lemon in it.

Pair lemon while consuming food high in iron can help increase your body’s intake of iron from the food. This can help to prevent iron deficiency and anemia.

It is okay to drink lemon water, however, do note that lemons are acidic and prolonged exposure over the tooth enamel can damage the teeth to be more prone to cavities. To protect your teeth, it is better to use a straw to drink your acidic drinks. For those that have gastric issues, try to avoid drinking it in the morning before food.

Water is the best beverage – it provides the hydration that our bodies need. Adding lemon enhances the “bland” flavour of the water, and who knows, we might drink more water than we realize it if we add lemon to our water!
