Back again to Hai Tien Lo
Since my last visit to Hai Tien Lo to try Masterchef Ricky’s exquisite culinary Cantonese cuisines on June 24, I’ve now had the pleasure of trying their specially delivered Mooncakes for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival.
In case you missed out on our previous post, here’s a quick recap.
Since opening its doors in 1987 at Pan Pacific Singapore, Hai Tien Lo has been a beacon of traditional Cantonese dining. This award-winning restaurant is celebrated for its innovative culinary excellence, offering a diverse selection of classic dishes crafted from age-old recipes.
With Master Chef Ricky’s dedication and serving the culinary industry for more than three decades, he brings his wealth of expertise to providing the best experience in Cantonese cuisine.
Hai Tien Lo Mooncakes
Every year, hotels and restaurants will crack their brains to create beautiful boxes for their mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival. This year, the award-winning Hai Tien Lo restaurant is going for all red and gold, adorned with their signature motifs. Very oriental colours and vibes.
The box received includes 4 different flavours:
- Double yolks with white lotus paste baked mooncake
- Single yolk with white lotus paste baked mooncake
- Caramel walnut cocoa baked mooncake
- Hai Tien Lo No. 1 tea with melon seeds baked mooncake
As a fan of salted egg yolks, I couldn’t wait to dig into the double yolk with white lotus paste baked mooncake. The presentation was thoughtful, with a wooden knife and five wooden forks included, making it easy to cut the mooncake into quarters. My first impression was how fresh the pastry felt—the softness of the lotus paste combined with the delicate crust was immediately noticeable. The crust was beautifully embossed with clearly defined characters, adding to the visual appeal.
When I took the first bite, the sweetness of the lotus paste was perfectly balanced, and what really stood out was its smooth texture and the thinness of the crust. The velvety mouthfeel made it hard to stop at just one piece; it was the kind of treat that leaves you wanting more.
For those who prefer a subtler egg yolk flavour, the single yolk mooncake is an excellent choice. With just one yolk, it allows the smooth, velvety texture of the lotus paste to shine even more, offering a more balanced taste experience. This option provides just the right hint of savoury richness from the yolk without overpowering the delicate sweetness of the lotus paste, making it perfect for those who want to savour the paste’s smoothness while still enjoying the traditional egg yolk element.
The third mooncake was a delightful surprise—something I hadn’t tried before—featuring the unique flavour of Caramel Walnut Cocoa. This pastry is a perfect blend of East meets West. As soon as you open the packaging, the rich aroma of cocoa and sweet caramel fills the air, instantly tempting your senses. The addition of walnuts adds a satisfying crunch, complementing the softness of the pastry. Despite what the name might suggest, this mooncake isn’t overly sweet. The recipe is beautifully balanced, allowing you to appreciate the complexity of flavours without any lingering greasiness. It’s a treat that’s likely to be a favourite among children.
Last but not least, frequent visitors to Hai Tien Lo will know about their signature tea, Hai Tien Lo No. 1, which is exclusively available at the restaurant, making it a unique treat for diners. This exclusivity enhances the tea’s appeal, as it’s not something you can easily find elsewhere. They’ve incorporated this special edition tea into their mooncake series, adding an extra layer of sophistication and making the mooncakes even more delightful.
After trying the mooncakes, it is clearly shown how focused and meticulous the chef is in defining the exquisite taste of the bakes.
Apart from traditional baked mooncakes, they have also prepared the other version which is well liked by many.
Mango Pomelo Snow Skin Mooncake
This is Singaporean all time favourite dessert and now it is made into mooncake. Definitely worth trying.
Mao Shan Wang Durian Mooncake
Another all time favourite among the locals, durian mooncake has been one of the hot favourites.
With hot weather like Singapore, this might be a good option to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with family or friends.
