In this special column called the “TLC x Fempreneurs Series”, we will be featuring inspiring Female Entrepreneurs (Fempreneurs) in short. You will be able to have a sneak peek at their mindsets and their daily habits.

Believe in the power of community. On some days when you feel big goals are impossible, or when you feel like giving up, you need to lean on your like-minded community. You can even “borrow” motivation, and in turn “return” with your own inspiring stories to pay it forward.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m actually a very boring person because the simplest thing in life makes me contented. But as I grow older, I learn to want to make the most out of everything. So when I became a mother, I will always consider what is more penny-worth. And this slowly became a big part of me. So when I started Baby Express, the idea was to provide good quality products at affordable prices.

What got you started on your business?

I was pregnant with my 4th child and just quit my part-time job. I had morning sickness throughout the day in the beginning. It was a tough time because financially, I was in a crisis with almost no savings.

It started with the idea of doing a home-based online business selling baby products since I was also looking out for baby products then. And it was easier for me to be able to care for the other 3 kids at home. Then I narrowed my search into essential baby products which eventually led me to breast pumps. I realized in Singapore, there weren’t many choices. If you wanted something portable, it would be expensive. Or the cheap ones were compromised.

I myself had tried tons of breast pumps and realized this is an essential that is really lacking because it can also affect mummy’s decision in breastfeeding. So I started out by contacting factories to see what’s available overseas. And that’s when I realized that there are so many possibilities.

Before you started on your business, what did you do on a full-time basis?

I was a Sales and Marketing Executive for years in a few industries, who had to be out all the time to meet people.

What were some difficulties you faced in your life and how did you overcome them?

The most difficult time was when I was pregnant with my 4th child. Things at home were bad, and we were struggling financially. Pregnancy this round was the worst too. I was vomiting all day, hardly ate, and was required to rest in bed as much as possible. Luckily my parents were supportive when I decided to do this business. They would come over as much as possible to help with the kids. And I am blessed to have 3 obedient kids who helped out at home.

Who inspires you?

My children are my inspiration. I very much live my life for them. Seeing them happy and growing well makes it all worth it. And of course, not forgetting my customers too. Many times they were very kind to send me thank you and encouragement messages. And seeing how my products actually helped them, inspires me more.

What excites you most about your industry?

The fact that there are many mothers and mother-to-be would be happy to know about Baby Express. Knowing that my products actually helped many mothers in their breastfeeding journey.

What is your vision / personal motto?

Anything is possible when you put your heart into it.

Do you have any word of advice for other ladies who are starting their business/ starting to pursue their dream?

It’s always easy to dream, difficult to pursue, and tougher to preserve. Tough things don’t last, only tough people do. You don’t have to start big. Sometimes you just need to start small and go with the flow.

How do you think you can help ladies to feel confident and empowered?

I started the business from scratch and did it on pre-order back then, which is very much a $0 startup. I don’t have big financial backing too. I learned new things every day and did everything myself. The most important thing is your mindset. Find your target and just get there. There will be detours and setbacks but as long as you keep going, you will eventually reach your target.

What have you learned recently that you hope the other ladies can take back?

There’s really nothing that has the best of both worlds. So we really have to plan our time and life and give our best to make every second count. And setbacks are bound to happen but we need to learn to get back up no matter what.

What is one thing you are grateful for?

I’m grateful for everyone around me. The ones who quietly supported, the customers, and those who shared about us. The ones who didn’t support me too, because they made me want to prove them wrong.

What do you do in your free time as self-care? How do you unwind?

I bring my kids out for walks, or just lounging on the sofa for a movie. Days spent with my kids make it feels like a holiday.
