Believe in the power of community. On some days when you feel big goals are impossible, or when you feel like giving up, you need to lean on your like-minded community. You can even “borrow” motivation, and in turn “return” with your own inspiring stories to pay it forward.

In this special column called the “TLC x Fempreneurs Series”, we will be featuring inspiring Female Entrepreneurs (Fempreneurs) in short. You will be able to have a sneak peek at their mindset and their daily habits.

Meet Sasha M

Sasha M is an award-winning pop music artist based in Singapore. Her music and lyrics are inspired by her life experiences. Sasha is also an actress for TV and film, and performs for events around the country.

Sasha believes in the transformative power of music, and hopes to inspire a positive change in others through her songs. She was propelled into a solo career when her first collaborative release, ‘Loaded’, peaked at #2 on the Spotify Germany Viral 50 charts.

No stranger to the stage, Sasha has performed with French DJ Tchami at Ultra Music Festival Singapore 2017, as well as several festivals and events around Singapore. Internationally, she has presented her original music to audiences in Los Angeles and Berlin.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m Sasha M, and I’m an independent singer-songwriter, performer, and recording artist. My main focus is on creating dance pop music that spreads messages of positivity and empowerment.

I started my independent solo project with the first song released in 2018, ‘Loaded‘, a collaboration with a German EDM producer. To our surprise, the song went viral and hit #2 on the Spotify Germany Viral 50! That’s when I knew I had to keep on going with music.

Before you started on your music journey, what did you do on a full time basis?

Previously, I had been a journalist and then a content writer in a marketing position, working in a startup and then an SME. I was also in charge of a media division of the startup where we did broadcast type interviews. I learnt everything top to bottom about video production, filming and editing, as well as interviews, content writing, and digital marketing. Mostly I learnt a lot from working under very strict bosses! Everything I learnt has helped me to achieve what I have on my own now as an independent artist.

Sasha MWhat were some difficulties you faced in your life and how did you overcome them?

When I was 16, my father passed away. He was the sole breadwinner of our household, and our family structure basically fell apart without him. My mother sold the house, my brothers left, and I had to learn to become very independent and take care of my mom. I was still studying at the time and a minor, but I learnt to take full responsibility for my finances and be very prudent with my spending. I also learnt how to deal with deep emotional loss, and to grit my teeth and keep going despite all kinds of challenges.

What is your vision / personal motto?

Be happy, and make the world a better place.

What excites you most about your industry?

My industry (music & entertainment) excites me because of how impactful it is on people. People are always listening to music, watching TV shows and movies. The shows and stories they consume help to shape their worldview. I want to be part of the shaping of someone’s worldview, in a positive way. I believe music, and art, is transformative, and I hope to help do great things for people through art.

Sasha M, The Ladies Cue, Chef AvenueWhat is one thing you are grateful for?

I’m really grateful for everyone who has supported me and my music. First of all, my patrons on Patreon, they help me make the music I envision a reality. My collaborators and partners in content creation and career development, for believing in me and lending their expertise to my work. My friends who are very much like family, for keeping me sane. In essence, I’m grateful for the good people around me!

Do you have any word of advice for other ladies who are starting their business / starting to pursue their dream?

Believe in yourself. Don’t be your own worst enemy. We all have insecurities, so it really helps if you can find people who support and encourage you in your dreams.

Who inspires you?

Camila Cabello, Dua Lipa, Jennifer Lopez – to name a few!

Sasha M, The Ladies Cue, Chef AvenueHow do you think you can help ladies to feel confident and empowered?

My music is all about feeling confident and empowered! I make the kind of music I love – music that makes me smile, and makes me want to dance. Dancing always gets me in a good mood!

What have you learnt recently that you hope the other ladies can take back?

I learnt that it is important to both be kind, and set boundaries to protect yourself. Having the right balance of these two qualities will help you a lot in life.

What do you do in your free time as self care? How do you unwind?

My self care is cooking. I really love it. I also love spending time with friends, dancing, and being with animals (especially horses!).
