Durian, the King of Tropical Fruits, is part and parcel of Singaporean’s life. Anyone loves durian as much as I do? Every time I eat durian with my friends, there are always myths circling around. There are so many Do’s and Don’ts which made me very curious. Being me, I decided to debunk all these myths and bring the facts to the table!

Myth #1: You cannot consume alcohol together with durian

Bet you have heard this from your friends before, and NO, there is no conclusive evidence or proof to show that alcohol and durian is a killer combination. However, alcohol and durian can cause your liver to work extra hard as your liver needs to metabolise both fats and sugars present in the durian and alcohol. You may also feel more bloated and face indigestion too!

Myth #2 : Durian has very high in concentration of cholesterol

Answer is NO. and in fact it has ZERO cholesterol. Contrary to belief, durian contains heart-healthy monounsaturated fats which help to lower bad cholesterol low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and moderate your high blood pressure.

Myth #3: Durian need to be consumed with mangosteen to reduce body heatiness

Still, there is no scientific proof of that. Based on conventional Chinese wisdom, they stated that mangosteen, a cooling fruit, will reduce the heatiness associated with durians. Perhaps it’s because they are harvested during the same season, and thus are sold together!

Myth #4: Eating durian can increase your libido

No, there is no scientific proof of this yet! When we consume durian, the heatiness in the durian can cause our body temperature to rise, but this does not make the fruit an aphrodisiac!

Now that we have debunked the myths, let’s explore the facts on durian and understand how we can enjoy the benefits of durian!

Fact #1: Durian is rich in nutrients

Durian is naturally rich in potassium, dietary fibre, iron, vitamin C, and vitamin B complex. Thus, The king of fruits is excellent for improving muscle strength and blood pressure, bowel movements and skin health. It also supports the nervous and immune systems, and enhances red blood cell formation. It’s definitely good for people that have digestive system issues and it improves heart health.

Fact #2: Durian is an instant energizer

Durian contains high carbohydrate content that helps to replenish low energy levels quickly in healthy individuals. It also contains high potassium content which can help to reduce fatigue and relieve mental stress and anxiety.

Fact #3: Durian may cause weight gain

High consumption of any food will cause weight gain. One seed durian (about 40 g) has 54 calories and a daily of 2000 calories are recommended for an average adult. Do your math and consume with moderation!

Fact #4: People with diabetes must control their durian intake

Durian contains simple sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose. If you have diabetes, do limit your consumption due to its high sugar content.
