What is Ube?

Ube, a vibrant purple yam native to the Philippines, has been gaining international popularity for its unique flavour, striking colour, and versatility in various culinary applications. Traditionally used in Filipino desserts like ube halaya (a sweetened yam jam) and halo-halo (a mixed dessert), ube has captivated taste buds worldwide. Its sweet, slightly nutty, and subtly earthy flavour profile pairs well with many ingredients, making it a favourite among chefs and food enthusiasts.

Ube’s growing fame has led to the creation of numerous ube-flavoured products, one of the most exciting being Ube Cream Liqueur. This liqueur combines the creamy richness of a traditional cream liqueur with the distinct flavour of ube, resulting in a vibrant, indulgent beverage that is as visually appealing as it is delicious. Ube Cream Liqueur is perfect for sipping on its own, but its true potential lies in its ability to elevate a wide range of other beverages.

The Flavour Profile of Ube Cream Liqueur

To fully appreciate how Ube Cream Liqueur can enhance various beverages, it’s essential to understand its flavour profile. The liqueur is typically smooth and creamy, with a balanced sweetness that allows the natural flavours of ube to shine through. The earthiness of the yam is subtle, while its sweet and nutty notes are more pronounced, giving the liqueur a rich, full-bodied taste. This complexity makes Ube Cream Liqueur a versatile ingredient that can be used in both sweet and savoury drinks.

The vibrant purple hue of the liqueur adds a visual element that makes any drink more enticing. The colour alone can transform a simple cocktail into a show-stopping creation, making Ube Cream Liqueur an excellent choice for those looking to impress guests or elevate their drink presentation.

Crafting Cocktails with Ube Cream Liqueur

Ube Cream Liqueur is a fantastic base for crafting cocktails that are both unique and delicious. Its rich, creamy texture makes it a perfect match for other spirits, mixers, and flavours.

At Jungle Ballroom in Mondrian, we were invited to the launch of Ube Cream Liqueur. With unlimited shots of the purple drink and a free flow of snacks. Everyone had a great time enjoying the ambience of the club, the food, the drinks and the company.

The Cocktails

Three different types of cocktails were concocted for the night. One of them is really special.

Ube Shooter

I always recommend starting with the original flavour when trying something new. Ube Shooter is a great choice—a small sip packed with a big flavour.

Ube Forest

One of the creations at Jungle Ballroom, the Ube Forest comes with grated coconut, similar to the Ube Shooter, but with a twist—the rim of the shot glass is coated in grated coconut. This adds an aromatic touch, enhancing the drink with the rich flavours of both coconut and ube.

Ube Kaya Toast

The Ube Kaya Toast is a cocktail crafted specifically for Singapore, blending pandan, toasted grated coconut, and Ube Cream Liqueur. It offers a unique twist on the classic Kaya toast, with the toasted coconut adding a rich aroma that brings a modern Peranakan vibe to the drink. This cocktail is a must-try.
