Believe in the power of community. On some days when you feel big goals are impossible, or when you feel like giving up, you need to lean on your like-minded community. You can even “borrow” motivation, and in turn “return” with your own inspiring stories to pay it forward.
In this special column called the “TLC x Fempreneurs Series”, we will be featuring inspiring Female Entrepreneurs (Fempreneurs) in short. You will be able to have a sneak peek at their mindsets and their daily habits.
Meet Christel Goh
Christel Goh, Founder of Play Huahee, was featured as one of the CLEO change makers in 2018. When her grandmother had early signs of dementia, she knew it was going to be tough. She learnt that early intervention through puzzle games could help to delay the progression of the dementia.
The games available in the market do not suit her grandmother, who was familiar with Hokkein. Hence, she downloaded an illustration app on her iPad and started sketching away. This led to the start of Play Huahee, which consisted of whimsical drawings of localized items that Singaporeans are familiar with.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I started Play Huahee to offer localised games and activities for seniors when I realised there was a lack of such products in the market. Play Huahee is now a content platform aimed at empowering seniors, engaging families. We offer content related to retirement, aging and caregiving so that seniors and caregivers can make informed decisions.
I currently still run Grow Public Relations. Grow PR is a public relations consultancy aimed at supporting young brands to grow in influence at a fraction of advertising costs.
What got you started on your business?
My grandma took care of me when I was younger. As I grew up, she grew old. Living with her made me see the challenges of aging. This made me want to do more in this area.
What excites you most about your industry?
For Play Huahee, it is always exciting to see how things are changing in the industry so that we can all age better.
For Grow PR, I really enjoy working with start-ups and SMEs. You get to see their passion and desire to build a great business and disrupt industries/impact lives through their work. This kept me going to run Grow PR.
Who inspires you?
My family. My mum is very dedicated towards making sure my grandma ages well.
Watching my grandma age was difficult at times. It made me realise the importance of having strong family support.
What is your vision / personal motto?
To find meaning in work, and deliver good work.
What is one thing you are grateful for?
I am grateful for my family support, food on the table and a roof over my head.
What do you do in your free time as self care? How do you unwind?
Doing nothing. watching YouTube videos or Netflix. I also exercise to destress.
What have you learnt recently that you hope the other ladies can take back?
I am always learning to be more rational and not let emotions get in the way as much.
Be rational and don’t plunge into starting a business. Leave your full-time job only when you are making a sustainable income.
