In this special column called the “TLC x Fempreneurs Series”, we will be featuring inspiring Female Entrepreneurs (Fempreneurs) in short. You will be able to have a sneak peek at their mindsets and their daily habits.
Believe in the power of community. On some days when you feel big goals are impossible, or when you feel like giving up, you need to lean on your like-minded community. You can even “borrow” motivation, and in turn “return” with your own inspiring stories to pay it forward.
Meet Kadence Wang (Wonder Mummies)
Tell us a little about yourself.
Growing up, I have always paid more attention in my science classes compared to the rest and I knew my calling would be in the related industries. I have a degree in biomedical sciences and a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine and have always been passionate about chemistry in our everyday lives. I’m that friend that carefully reads food labels, skincare labels and the one peers like to ask for advice on health issues or what to eat to lose weight. So to start a business that revolves around these became a natural calling.
What got you started on your business?
Naturally, when I got pregnant and embarked to source the most natural products for my baby, I realized many mothers to be and even current parents do not know how to make informed choices. Does the diaper barrier cream contain undesirable ingredients? What paint should the cot wood be coated with to be baby-safe? My husband and I decided to start Wonder Mummies to empower parents on the meaningful journey of parenthood without compromising on the health of their little ones.
Before you started on your business, what did you do on a full-time basis?
By a stroke of fate, I left my comfort zone and dabbled in the digital marketing space!
What were some difficulties you faced in your life and how did you overcome them?
Growing up in a poor family made me realize life wasn’t going to be equal. I remember I studied hard to qualify for entry to study my degree and masters in Nutrition and Dietetics in Australia, but could not do so as family finances won’t allow it. And to see peers who scored lesser than average grades than I breeze their way into a comfy overseas education and lifestyle really got me a reality check and I told myself I was ready to fight harder than others in life to have equal opportunities. I guess God has a path for everyone, I later found myself enjoying my bachelor’s studies in NTU and entering the exciting pharmaceutical industry.
Who inspires you?
My mother. Being a single mum, she was the silent hardworking person in the room. She worked the hardest and never complained. She taught me that perseverance and hard work can overcome all odds.
What excites you most about your industry?
The possibilities for extension and growth are limitless! And I always seek to run businesses that do good or benefit humankind in general, it makes everything more purposeful.
What is your vision / personal motto?
Everything happens for a reason, you just need to be a Yes Man for opportunities to come your way!
Do you have any word of advice for other ladies who are starting their business/ starting to pursue their dream?
I am not a feminist, but ladies definitely have it more challenging than men. We can’t outsource our motherly roles, neither do we want to. Learn to manage your expectations and communicate well with your husband and family. Everything can be overcome while you embark on your entrepreneurial journey. And if you don’t start today, somebody will so get your ass moving!
How do you think you can help ladies to feel confident and empowered?
To me, knowledge equates to confidence, so it is essential to be equipped with the necessary knowledge of your industry. You don’t have to be the subject matter expert in everything you do – you can employ one – but having the right knowledge will help you to make the right decisions.
What have you learnt recently that you hope the other ladies can take back?
Something may be new, but just say Yes, go with that gut feeling! You’ll never know where your Yes takes you.
What is one thing you are grateful for?
This may sound cliche but I think being born in Singapore is the most fortunate thing that can happen to me.
What do you do in your free time as self-care? How do you unwind?
You’ll find me taking long walks in the cooling evening, doing yoga, or visiting a favorite cafe to wind down, I prefer alfresco seats, enjoying a moment of peace and solitude watching the world go by.
