In this special column called the “TLC x Fempreneurs Series”, we will be featuring inspiring Female Entrepreneurs (Fempreneurs) in short. You will be able to have a sneak peek at their mindsets and their daily habits.
Believe in the power of community. On some days when you feel big goals are impossible, or when you feel like giving up, you need to lean on your like-minded community. You can even “borrow” motivation, and in turn “return” with your own inspiring stories to pay it forward.
Meet Tay Hwee Ling (UE 3G Abacus)
Tell us a little about yourself. What is your business/ brand about?
I am a daughter, a wife, and a mother of 2. I have a deep interest in Chinese culture.
What got you started on your business?
My mum roped me into her company in 2011, to help her with her business, after I left my previous job in 2010.
Before you started your business, what did you do on a full-time basis?
I used to be a Secondary School Education Officer (Teacher).
What were some difficulties you faced in your life and how did you overcome them?
I faced a situation when I needed to take care of a child, and a toddler, and needed to take care of household chores, the job’s demands, and exam preparations all at once. There were too many things and too little time! I told myself to settle one thing at a time and had almost no time for myself.
Who inspires you?
I don’t have any specific hero in mind, but more everyday people around me, whose certain qualities make me think that they are great in their own way, and make me want to learn from them to better a better person every day. Eg. My mother-in-law who has a big heart and is a very serving lady, takes good care of everyone around her and yet gives everyone the space they need.
My mum is goal and task-orientated, and knows what she wants to get, and makes sure things are done. My dad who is silent and strongly supports the family, and helps everyone on his own A friend who has many children, and a job, and yet makes sure all children are well taken care of without any home helper, makes me realise the importance of work-life balance and that achieving a good family relationship with a demanding job on hand is not impossible, it is all about how much you are willing to sacrifices a bit of here and there in life.
A friend who holds many high positions in work, and who also has many children, makes me feel that there are many superwomen out there who can excel and crave an exciting life despite the heavy workload and family commitments.
What excites you most about your industry?
To find little geniuses around you, and provide chances and platforms for them to display their talents. Infusing a historical subject with modern elements
What is your vision / personal motto?
Have a heart of empathy for everyone around you.
What have you learned recently that you hope the other ladies can take back?
Celebrate and treasure every little thing in life.
What do you do in your free time as self care? How do you unwind?
Attend a concert or two, take a long bus journey, and pamper me with beauty and foodie treats.
How do you think you can help ladies to feel confident and empowered?
Ladies, let’s embrace our unique beauty and inner strength! We possess the remarkable ability to multitask with grace and resilience, overcoming obstacles with determination and grit. When life throws its challenges our way, we rise above, stronger and more radiant than ever.
What is one thing you are grateful for?
Grateful for the chance to try out different challenges at different phase of life.
