In this special column called the “TLC x Fempreneurs Series”, we will be featuring inspiring Female Entrepreneurs (Fempreneurs) in short. You will be able to have a sneak peek at their mindsets and their daily habits.

Believe in the power of community. On some days when you feel big goals are impossible, or when you feel like giving up, you need to lean on your like-minded community. You can even “borrow” motivation, and in turn “return” with your own inspiring stories to pay it forward.

Tell us a little about yourself. What is your business/ brand about?

I’m Kuah Wan Keng, Founder of @ASK Training. We are a leading provider of competency-based training programs and your partner in personal and professional growth. As a SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) Approved Training Organisation (ATO) since 2014 and an accredited Continuing Education and Training (CET) Centre, we are dedicated to delivering top-tier education and development experiences.

Our programmes cover a wide range of areas, including Digital Marketing, IT Infrastructure and Operations (IIO), Microsoft Office tools, and Soft Skills Training. We focus on communication, interpersonal skills, management, motivation, and personal effectiveness, catering to Singapore’s government agencies, corporate clients, and individuals.

We strive to offer comprehensive training that aligns with learning needs and business productivity goals, ensuring effective personal growth and professional advancement for every participant.

What got you started on your business?

My journey into training and development began with a profound appreciation for the field, sparked during my tenure at Apple Computer. I experienced the power of high-quality training firsthand and this ignited my passion for helping others develop their skills. Later, while working at the Civil Service College, where public service officers needed to learn IT skills, my belief in the transformative impact of learning was further solidified, deepening my passion for training and development.

This inspired me to start @ASK Training with my brother Anson, leveraging our collective strengths to create a training academy focused on empowering individuals and businesses through education. We both shared a vision for spreading the joy of learning and recognised the need to provide training and support for those looking to advance or pivot in their careers. Our goal has always been to provide accessible, impactful training that drives personal and professional growth, and this goal continues to drive us today.

Before you started your business, what did you do on a full-time basis?

I graduated from the French-Singapore Institute in 1990 with a Diploma in Electronics and Electrical Engineering and began my career as an engineering assistant, where I gained valuable experience in programming.

Before starting my own business, I spent seven enriching years at Apple Computer, followed by a decade in administration and software development. I also worked at the Civil Service College, where I focused on IT skills training for public sector officers.

Training has always been a cornerstone of my career, with expertise in administrative operations, event organisation, and class scheduling and planning. These skills have been fundamental to my success and growth in the training industry.

What were some difficulties you faced in your life and how did you overcome them?

One significant difficulty was setting up proper training facilities for @ASK Training. While I excelled in planning and organising, the practical setup of setting up a conducive training environment was challenging.

Fortunately, my brother Anson, who has experience in manufacturing, stepped in to help. He planned the entire renovation of our facilities and ensured that everything was set up efficiently. His support was crucial in overcoming this challenge and getting the job done.

Who inspires you?

I’m deeply inspired by the strength and resilience of those who face adversity head-on, especially my mother and my brother, Anson. My mother, a cancer survivor since her 40s, has always maintained unwavering optimism about life. As for Anson, despite facing health challenges, his steadfast determination to help grow @ASK Training during our early days, while prioritising his well-being, has been truly remarkable and motivating. Both my mother’s and Anson’s perseverance remind me that no challenge is insurmountable with the right mindset and a strong support system.

What excites you most about your industry?

What excites me most is the transformative power of learning. In the training industry, we have the opportunity to change lives by equipping individuals with skills that open up new career opportunities as well as personal and professional growth. Seeing the impact that our programs have on participants’ lives is incredibly rewarding and drives us to continue on this path.

What is your vision / personal motto?

My vision is to create a lasting impact by empowering individuals through education and high-quality training. I believe that continuous learning is the cornerstone of both personal and professional success. My personal motto, “Never too late and never too old to learn anything,” has guided me throughout my journey and shaped the way we operate at @ASK Training.

What have you learned recently that you hope the other ladies can take back?

I’ve learned that real strength comes from being adaptable. No matter what you’re facing, whether it is overcoming a business challenge or dealing with your personal responsibilities, being flexible and open to change is extremely important. Especially when we’re living in a world where change happens so quickly, I hope other women can embrace this mindset and feel empowered to pivot when necessary without feeling discouraged by setbacks.

What do you do in your free time as self care? How do you unwind?

I enjoy spending time with my family, which helps me disconnect from work and recharge. I also enjoy travelling and using my free time to help others, which allows me to reflect and appreciate life. It’s important to slow down and take care of yourself, especially in a fast-paced environment like entrepreneurship.

How do you think you can help ladies to feel confident and empowered?

I believe that confidence comes from developing your personal competence. By providing accessible training and skill development opportunities at @ASK Training, we can help women gain the skills and knowledge they need to excel in their careers. Offering personalised guidance and encouragement empowers them to achieve their goals and build confidence in their abilities.

What is one thing you are grateful for?

I am grateful for the strong support system I’ve had throughout my journey. My family, especially my siblings who have joined me in this venture, have always been there for me. I’m also thankful for my team at @ASK Training, whose trust and collaboration have been vital to achieving our vision. I couldn’t have achieved what I have today without their support.
